Art writing workshop with Woollahra Art Gallery

Last week I had the opportunity to work with Woollahra Art Gallery to deliver a workshop on art writing to a group of high school art students.

Using the current exhibitions, including work by Sue Jo Wright, Mel Booth and the Little Umbrella Collective, students undertook a series of scaffolded activities designed to get them thinking and feeling their way through the space, gathering granular details of works as well as bodily responses and any material/emotional associations they might make.

The group then worked to write a series of new wall labels, as well as propose a series of hypothetical interview questions for the artists.

I was delighted, challenged and inspired by the different creative approaches and questions that this group of young people brought to these activities and conversations and I really appreciated the opportunity to work with Woollahra Gallery in this context.

Los Angeles art binge

This year has been so busy, between writing commissions and stepping in as the Publications Editor at the Biennale of Sydney and running the National Gallery’s Digital Young Writers Residency that I haven’t known which way is up.

It’s been a good problem to have but a bit of literal distance has made me appreciate it all the more.

I’ve just got back from a trip to LA with my Mum and sister and so this is just a shameless grab of photos of some of the extraordinary art we saw. Proof of (artistic) life and a reminder of the joys of just looking at art.

Some of the highlights:

Ed Ruscha and Simone Leigh at LACMA, Mickalene Thomas at The Broad, Josh Kline at MOCA, WInfred Rembert at Hauser & Wirth….

Biennale of Sydney opening & publication

Last December I joined the Biennale of Sydney team as their Publications Editor and it’s been a mad couple of months working to get the catalogue across the line in time for the opening week. I’ve absolutely loved being part of this small, incredibly dedicated team and seeing this 24th edition come into being.

White Bay Power Station is truly something to behold and is such an addition to the cultural landscape of Sydney. It’s going to be fascinating to watch it evolve as a site.

I’m looking forward to finding some time to step back and appreciate it all.
